On October 31, 2026, it will be time once again for costumes, candy, pumpkins and plenty of spooky atmosphere. But where does Halloween actually come from? Why is it celebrated on October 31, and which Halloween traditions have survived to this day?
🎃 Halloween 2026: When Is It Celebrated?
Halloween 2026 takes place on Saturday, October 31. The date remains the same every year and always falls on the final day of October.
The name Halloween comes from the term “All Hallows’ Eve”, meaning the evening before All Saints’ Day on November 1. Over time, this name developed into the word Halloween that we use today.
Nowadays, October 31 is mainly associated with carved pumpkins, costumes, candy and Halloween parties. The typical atmosphere really comes to life in the evening, when houses are decorated, pumpkins are lit and costumed children go from door to door.
👻 Where Does Halloween Come From? Origins and History
The origins of Halloween cannot be traced back to a single tradition. The celebration is often associated with the Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the transition from the lighter to the darker part of the year.
Later, Christian influences connected to All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day were added. The evening before All Saints’ Day eventually became known as “All Hallows’ Eve”.
Many traditions continued to develop particularly in Ireland and later in North America. Irish immigrants brought their customs with them to the United States, where Halloween became increasingly popular. Costumes, carved pumpkins, parties and collecting candy gradually became established parts of the celebration.
Over time, this developed into the modern Halloween that is celebrated in many countries today.
🍬 Trick or Treat: Halloween Customs and Traditions
One of the best-known Halloween traditions is “Trick or Treat”. Costumed children go from house to house asking for candy. According to tradition, anyone who does not hand out a treat may have to expect a small prank.
Costumes also play an important role. When it comes to dressing up, there are almost no limits to the imagination. Alongside classic witches, vampires and ghosts, unusual and creative costumes add even more variety.
Halloween parties have also become a firm part of the celebration. Houses and rooms are decorated with pumpkins, cobwebs, ghosts, skeletons and other decorations to create their own spooky settings.
Another Halloween classic is pumpkin carving. A glowing pumpkin outside the front door has become just as much a part of Halloween as candy and costumes.
🕸️ Pumpkins, Ghosts & More
ew celebrations are associated with as many distinctive motifs as Halloween. Pumpkins, ghosts, witches, bats, black cats, skeletons and cobwebs are among the best-known Halloween symbols.
The Jack O’Lantern is especially iconic – a hollowed-out pumpkin with a carved face. Before pumpkins were commonly used for this purpose, people carved vegetables such as turnips. In North America, the larger and easier-to-carve pumpkin eventually became the preferred choice.
The typical Halloween colors are also instantly recognizable. Orange is associated with pumpkins and autumn leaves, while black emphasizes the dark and mysterious side of the celebration.
